We see a lot of people dealing with swelling, including leg edema, and consistent lymphatic drainage massage tends to help when you support it at home too. For the first 48 hours, the single most important rule is simple: hydrate steadily and keep your movement gentle. That means water, short walks, and rest. Skip intense workouts, extra heat (sauna, steam, hot tub), and alcohol so your body can keep moving fluid instead of getting knocked back.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: the do’s that keep swelling down
Our Lymphatic Drainage Massage or Detox with Sauna Wrap sessions are 60 minutes, and that work keeps going after you leave. The goal over the next two days is to support fluid movement and avoid anything that dehydrates you or spikes swelling.
48-hour priority list: drink water through the day, take light walks, eat lighter and lower-salt meals, and give your body time to settle.
Do this today
- Hydrate on purpose. We generally recommend steady water intake all day, plus a small electrolyte drink if you feel drained. Summer in New York makes dehydration sneak up fast, especially if you’re heading back to the subway.
- Walk gently every hour. A few minutes around your home or down the block is enough. If you’re in Central Harlem, an easy stroll on the tree-lined blocks counts. Keep it relaxed.
- Choose light meals. Think protein, veggies, fruit, soups, and lower-sodium options. Very salty or fried foods can make you feel puffier for the next day or two.
- Follow compression guidance if you’re wearing garments. Compression supports results, especially for post-op recovery and contour maintenance. If you’re unsure about fit, let us know. We’ll help you problem-solve it.
Avoid this for at least 24 to 48 hours
- Extra heat: hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, very hot baths. After a sauna wrap, doubling up on heat can leave you dizzy and dehydrated.
- Hard workouts and heavy lifting: sweating a lot right away can throw off hydration and flare swelling.
- Alcohol: it dehydrates you and tends to slow down the “lighter” feeling people want after lymph massage.
The first week after lymph massage therapy: keep the progress, don’t restart the swelling
Most people notice they feel lighter and less “puffy” when they stay consistent. We hear this a lot from clients who come in regularly for edema and swelling management. The first week is when your daily habits can either hold onto the change or erase it.
Keep doing gentle movement, hydration, and lower-salt meals. If you’re commuting, long sitting or standing can bring swelling right back. Break it up with short walks and ankle pumps. Performers and people on their feet all day often love lymphatic massage because it can help them feel less heavy before an evening event.
A good rule: If you’re planning something in Harlem like an Apollo show or a visit to the Schomburg Center, build in a little extra time so you can walk calmly, not rush and overheat.
And if you’re doing our 3-session package at $125 each, try not to stack stressful, dehydrating days between sessions. Consistency is where people tend to see the most noticeable difference.
Compression, water, and self-massage: small habits that protect your result
You don’t need a complicated routine. You need a doable one. Here’s what usually makes the biggest difference after a lymphatic massage therapist works on fluid movement.
Hydration that actually works
Sip water consistently instead of chugging at night. If you’re sweating easily or it’s hot outside in New York, add a small electrolyte drink. Keep caffeine balanced with extra water.
Compression that fits right
If you’re wearing a garment for post-op or contour support, fit matters. Too loose won’t support swelling. Too tight can feel miserable. Let us know what you’re wearing and what feels off. We’ll guide you.
Gentle self-massage (light touch)
Use light, sweeping strokes toward the direction your therapist showed you. Lymph work isn’t about digging hard. If you’re sore or post-op, keep it very gentle and ask us to re-show you at your next visit.

When something feels “off” after a sauna wrap, call us instead of guessing
“So grateful to have found Body Sculpt Studios, and specifically Diamaris. She has gone above and beyond in making me comfortable and well looked after.”
one of our regulars
Some things are normal after lymphatic massage and a sauna wrap, like needing to use the bathroom more, feeling relaxed, or noticing less tightness. But you should never push through true warning signs.
Reach out right away if you notice: fever, severe sharp pain, increasing redness, sudden swelling, or anything that feels scary or rapidly worsening. If it feels urgent, seek medical care.
We’re based in Central Harlem (Harlem) and we support follow-ups for clients across Washington Heights, Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights, Mott Haven, and the Upper West and Upper East Sides. If you had surgery out of state and you’re back in NYC, you’re not on your own. We’ll talk through what you’re feeling and keep your plan simple and realistic.
If you’re in our 3-session package ($125 each), the best “next step” is usually staying consistent with your schedule and your aftercare. That’s when people tend to see improvement session after session.
